France releases new emergency alert phone app

France launched a new phone application today called SAIP designed to warn users in the event of a terrorist attack.

The app was launched in advance of Friday’s Euro 2016 football championships, which will continue until July.

The app’s name stands for “system for alerting and informing the population” in French. It is available on the Apple App store and on Google Play. Later versions will alert citizens of other types of emergencies.

It warns users before or during an attack and allows them to disseminate cautionary messages across their social media channels. It also provides advice on how to respond to a crisis, according to France’s interior ministry.
